FIlter Focus: ASME B31.3 Filters

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has been defining piping safety since 1922. ASME B31.3 contains requirements for piping typically found in petroleum refineries, chemical, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, semiconductor, and cryogenic plants. ASME B31.3 covers materials and components, design, fabrication, assembly, erection, examination, inspection, and testing of piping.

ASME B31.3 applies to all fluids including but not limited to:

  • Raw, intermediate, and finished chemicals
  • Petroleum products
  • Gas, steam, air, and water
  • Fluidized solids
  • Refrigerants
  • Cryogenic fluids

Norman Filter Company manufactures custom filter housings designed to be compliant with the requirements of ASME B31.3 High-Pressure Piping.  ASME compliant filter housings are our most robust units available, and they meet the stringent design requirements of ASME B31.3.  Additional pressure vessel standards can be met with these assemblies as well.  Contact NFC Sales for information regarding compliance to ASME BPVC Section VIII, European PED, NR-13 or any other nationally recognized pressure vessel standard.

ASME Compliant Filter Housings

Typical design to a nationally recognized standard such as B31.3 relies on limiting the maximum allowable stress values seen by the pressure vessel.  This ensures the component will safely stay below the yield stress of the parent material.  By designing to eliminate potential yield stress values as opposed to physical proof or burst test validation the product has a higher level of safety margin and complies to many strict national and international pressure vessel requirements.

On all new custom designs, NFC starts the design pressure using the rules of either ASME Section VIII or ASME B31.3 to ensure product reliability and safety.

NFC also comply with filter housing design standards such as:

  • ASME BPVC Section VIII
  • ASME B31.3 High-Pressure Piping
  • European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)
  • Brazilian NR13
  • CSA B51 & Canadian Registration Number (CRN)

Norman Filters offers a diverse filtration product line including high-pressure filter assemblies such as our 4500, U-115, 30K inline series. Our team also offers high pressure, high flow assemblies which include the 4900 series and our high-pressure mini inline 4200 series, a very popular product in the aerospace industry. We can customize filters to meet your most demanding needs that follow the ASME B31.3 compliant designs.

Some of our most popular filters that follow ASME B31.3 designs include:

Aerospace:

NFC Inline filters have a higher flow rate for body size. Commonly used in cryogenic service. Our inline filters are heavily used in aerospace ground support and flight applications with a wide range of customizable configurations such as AS1098 seal cuts in male fittings. Available ASME Sec. 8 B31.3 compliant design – consult engineering for pressure rating compliance.

Shipboard Firefighting Systems:

Every shipboard Halon firefighting system integrates our 4300 series straight in-line filters for control valve protection. These filters feature precision-woven stainless-steel wire mesh element. A custom designed 4200 series in-line filter with line replaceable assembly is a key component for shipboard radar systems PAO coolant filtration and have an ASME Section 8/B31.3 compliant design.

Oil & Gas:

Norman Filter Company has designed, built, and tested a series of B31.3 / ASME Sec. VII Div. 1 design compliant high-pressure assemblies for oil and gas applications requiring a specific design standard. Along with our standard product offering NFC manufactures and supplies T-Type assemblies with Grayloc and flange connection interfaces for offshore platform use.

Norman Filter Company is an AS9100D with ISO 9001 certified quality manufacturer of hydraulic filter housings, elements and filtration systems for the global industrial and aerospace markets. NFC designs, manufactures, and tests stainless steel high-pressure filter housings and elements. We supply state of the art high-pressure filter products for hundreds of companies and entities.
